Parent Update - September Issue 2

What's Happening at
Mighty Oak Academy

We are now into our fourth week of school! We are excited to share with you what we've been doing and the plan for the next few weeks.

This week we took advantage of the cooler weather to spend some time outdoors. We enjoyed practicing our soccer skills in P.E. class, learning about coordination with Bellarmine, counting in Kindergarten and learning about our school family in middle school. Week four is in the books! and we're looking forward to week 5!

Continuing the 1st Six Weeks program

This week we finish week four of our 1st Six weeks program. We have started to dive into the topics of school family, respect and choices and commitments.

Below each section are the topics that are covered in that section. We have a short definition of each topic, so you can see what your child is learning in the classroom these first six weeks.

  • Composure - we learn how to keep our cool in situations that are frustrating

  • Perceptions - we learn that things aren't always what they appear to be and we must look further before jumping to conclusions

  • Noticing - we learn to listen and see the people around us rather than judge them

  • Unity and Encouragement - we learn to come together and encourage and affirm one another

Relate

  • School Family - we learn what a school family is and how we treat each other

  • Respect - we learn what respect means to us and how we can show respect to others

  • Choices and Commitments - we learn that we all have choices and that we make commitments to each other at school like working to keep each other safe

  • Empathy - We learn how others feel

  • Positive Intent - we learn that we have good intentions when they interact with each other

Cell Phone Policy Update

Starting next week we will begin a policy of checking in cell phones at the front desk every morning at the start of school. While students are not allowed to have their personal cell phones in school, until now we have allowed them in the building if students keep them in their backpacks for the entire school day. This has proved diffiucult however and in order to help our students comply with our policy we will be securing their phones at the front desk, labeled with their name at the start of the school day. They will be able to pick them up from the front desk at the end of the school day.
